Minecraft best settings for low end systems & Optifine (ThinkPad T410)

Can you play Minecraft below minimum specs? Yes, but you need to adjust some specific settings. Seeing is believing, so check out the video which will give you all details and results.

Spoiler: the game can ran fine at above 30fps and 900p. Check out my article about dual-channel RAM as well, it will give you a big boost in performance for gaming with an iGPU.

Hardware specs for my ThinkPad T410 (which is two generations below the official minimums for Minecraft):

  • CPU Intel Core-i7 620M, 3.3 GHz Turbo, dual core (2/4)
  • GPU GMA HD Intel 5700MHD (Ironlake)
  • RAM 8GB DDR3

There are the three graphic settings that matter the most and gave me an increase from ca. 15 fps to 45 fps:

  1. Graphics: change fancy to fast
  2. Render distance: reduce the number of chunks to ca. 6
  3. Clouds: change fancy to fast

I did not notice any significant improve with any other settings, so try these three first.

What about the free Optifine mod? I did install it and got a smaller additional increase in fps in some scenarios (without changing any more settings). Those three settings above did nearly all the work for me. The video will show you how to install and activate Optifine if you so desire.
